Meditation & Crystals

I’m not a crystal specialist, and I only have a very broad knowledge about how to use them during meditation, but I can share some basics that I’ve been taught, and I’ll collect from some resources on the web about using crystals during meditation.

Clear crystalsIt’s not been scientifically proven that crystals can have any kind of healing properties, but there has been an enormous amount of evidence to the contrary by those who believe they have beneficial qualities. So, for the sake of all those who love crystals, we will just say that science has not yet caught up with a way to measure miracles or other non-evidencial energy healing or practices.

Crystals play a large part in the Tibetan Buddhist community, including the temple where I’m a member. The prayer rooms have one of the largest collections of crystals that you can view here. The Spiritual Director of Kunzang Palyul Chöling, Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo (my Lama) has collected crystals from around the world and carefully placed them in perfect positions that help heal, hold positive energy of prayer and practice, and radiate great blessings to all those who visit the temple. There is a 24 hour prayer vigil that has been on going for thirty years, and the crystals hold this amazing energy of virtuous intention for world peace, earths’ and the universes environment, and good mental and physical health.  There is no doubt that you can feel the energy when entering the prayer room.

I personally have crystals on my altar in my practice/meditation space. I believe they hold very precious intention of prayer and practice, and help me in my meditation. My personal experience of these crystals during meditation is spaciousness, and amazing peace and a kind of emptiness that encourages mental reflection and quietude.

“Meditation with crystals is a two-step process. First you must find the crystal that has the Universal Life Force energy that is appropriate to your intentions. Then you must either hold the crystal or place it in front of you where you can focus on it during your meditation. Selecting the right crystal takes a bit of work. Each crystal has a crystal energy lattice, a color ray of influence, and an earth power derived from its chemical makeup. ” Crystal Vault

So different crystals are believed to hold different types of healing energies that can be used in different kinds of meditation. For instance, most of the crystals in KPC are clear crystals of all different types. Clear crystals – some cloudy, some shot with other crystals such as obsidian, and rose quartz.

“Without question, Quartz crystal is the most versatile of all the stones. It contains the full spectrum of light and works on every level to bring our bodies back into balance. It is indeed the quintessential healing crystal. There is an old saying, “We are not human beings trying to be spiritual, we are spiritual beings trying to be human.” Clear Quartz Crystal can help you to re-connect to your spiritual source.” Wikinut

Other very beneficial crystals for meditation are rose quartz, smoky quartz, and amethyst. It’s said you can test the crystal by the feeling you have as soon as you see it. If there is no doubt, if the crystal is extremely beautiful to you, then it has properties that connect with your own energies and can be beneficial. However, it’s also very good to consult with a crystal specialist, because sometimes a crystal that is the same as your energies is comfortable, but if your energy needs adjusting or clearing, another crystal that might not connect with you immediately will give you benefit.  If you choose to mix crystals it’s good to get some advise so you don’t get crossed energies.

One day I was standing in a crystal shop in Sedona, Arizona ready to purchase a pendant with a moonstone in it. While standing there I started to feel really odd, as if my energy was shifting or changing. I’m not usually that sensitive to energy without focus, so it surprised me. I’m the kind that likes to stay grounded in my thinking, but understand there is no doubt that our minds do discern things our physical bodies don’t always experience.

By the time I purchased my necklace and stumbled out of the store I had slight vertigo and jumbled thoughts. It cleared after a bit, but I got back out of my car, went back into the store and stood looking at the spot where I’d been waiting. There was a large crystal about four feet high that had been sitting on the floor right next to my leg. I’m certain that because it was so large, and so many people had stood next to it by the register like I was, and because it was off center to my body, it had mis-aligned my energy. On the other hand, some believe that these beautiful crystals are beings with healing properties and even go so far as to feel certain they have personalities and intentions. Whose to say it didn’t remove negative energy from me in a healing manner. Whatever happened, I definitely had an experience that was unexpected, and quit evident, no question.

So even if you believe or not, its safe to say crystals are beautiful, and as one website states, it never hurts to have one because you might be surprised what it will bring into your meditation practice.

    1. Thanks so much for the compliment. It was my first meditation space in a private home and I was very nervous. That picture is no longer on this article but is on the “Meditation Room Altars – Part One” if your want to see it again.
